column_back-page The Back Page: Bars, Real and Imagined
By Bill Ott

I love bars and books about bars, which is why I was drawn to two recent compilations of writers’ and movie stars’ favorite watering holes. Mark Bailey’s Of All the Gin Joints: Stumbling through Hollywood History (Algonquin) takes thirsty readers from the silent era to modern times, recalling celebrated tipplers and their favorite hangouts. The emphasis here, naturally, given the tax brackets of the celebs, is on classy gin joints.

Vitamin-Detective Story behind the Story: Catherine Price’s Vitamania: Our Obsessive Quest for Nutritional Perfection
By Donna Seaman

Vitamin Detective

Curiosity, keen intelligence, energetic attentiveness, a sense of adventure, and a love of sharing discoveries are essential traits for a science writer. Add humor and ebullience and you have Catherine Price, whose byline has appeared in the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle, Slate and Salon, Parade, and O, the Oprah Magazine.

column_at-leisure At Leisure with Joyce Saricks: Big Books for a Long Winter’s Night
By Joyce Saricks

It’s December, a month so filled with social and work activities that it’s hard to believe we’ll ever have time for anything relaxing—like reading—again. Knowing how busy our lives are this month, I write this column looking forward to January, when life settles down and those long winter nights invite curling up with a good book. In Chicago, where it’s bound to be cold, I’m already longing for a comfy chair, purring cats (preferably not ensconced on my reading material), a stack of novels, and perhaps some Glühwein left over from the holidays. What could be better?
