Find more Top 10 Romance Fiction for Youth
Romance comes in all varieties this year. Everyone from a heavy metal fan to a girl caught up in the world of Celtic myth is falling in love, and almost half of the year’s best romances look at love through the eyes of a boy-who is sometimes looking at another boy. Teens in the throes of love themselves will connect with the novels below.
Abbott, Hailey. The Bridesmaid. 2005. Delacorte, $17. 99 (0-385-90249-2).
Gr. 6-9. Fifteen-year-old Abby’s wry, first-person narrative details her older sister’s transformation into a “Bridezilla,” a species they both loathe. Meanwhile, Abby’s own love life takes a hopeful turn.
Bradley, Alex. 24 Girls in 7 Days. 2005. Dutton, $15.99 (0-525-47369-6).
Gr. 8-11. In this “boy romance,” Jack has looked forward to his senior prom for a long time, but now it’s just weeks away, and he is dateless. Amid much angst, hilarity, and plot twists, he finally finds the right girl.
Earls, Nick. After Summer. 2005. Houghton/Graphia, $6.99 (0-618-45781-X).
Gr. 10-12. College-bound Alex Delaney spends time at his mother’s beach house, where he meets a tanned, toned, and mysterious girl. A wistful, realistic tale of summer romance and first love.
Elliott, L. M. Annie, between the States. 2004. HarperCollins, $15 (0-06-001211-0).
Gr. 7-10. Annie’s certainty about the South deteriorates as the Civil War divides her family physically and ideologically, and as she loses her heart to an occupying Union soldier.
Krovatin, Christopher. Heavy Metal and You. 2005. Scholastic/Push, $16.95 (0-439-73648-X).
Gr. 10-12. Sam is a smoking, drinking Metal Head who spews vulgarity; then he meets Melissa. Infused with music, humor, and anger, this is a perfect take on relationships and how they change.
Melling, O. R. The Hunter’s Moon. Abrams/Amulet, $16.95 (0-8109-5857-0).
Gr. 9-12. Gwen and her Irish cousin, Findabhair, hope to spend Gwen’s visit to Ireland seeking “the Faraway World,” but neither girl is prepared when the King of the Faeries whisks Findabhair away.
Meyer, I. A. Under the Jolly Roger: Being an Account of the Further Nautical Adventures of Jacky Faber. 2005. Harcourt, $17 (0-15-205345-X).
Gr. 7-10. This swashbuckler with the unconventional heroine begins as 15-year-old Jacky Faber steps off a whaler to search for her beloved Jaimy. The longing continues, and after finding (and losing) her true love once again, Jacky sets sail for Boston, where her adventures will continue.
Ostow, Micol. Westminster Abby. 2005. Penguin/Speak, paper, $6.99 (0-14-240413-6).
Gr. 6-9. Ostow’s novel is part of the new Students across the Seven Seas series, which revolves around American students visiting foreign shores. Here, 16-year-old Abby, in London, must decide if she’ll take back boyfriend James, who cheated on her, or stick with Ian, the Brit from Manchester.
Peters, Julie Anne. Far from Xanadu. 2005. Little, Brown/Megan Tingley, $16.99 (0-316-15881-X).
Gr. 8-11. Mike is an iron-pumping, softball-playing girl who has way too much ugliness in her life. Then she meets Xanadu and falls head over muscle T-shirt in love. Only problem? Xanadu is straight.
Steinhofel, Andreas. The Center of the World. 2005. Delacorte, $16.95 (0-385-72943-X).
