REVIEW.
First published December 15, 1999 (Booklist).
This debut novel from Ebershoff, editor of Modern Library, offers the fictionalized telling of the first man to surgically become a woman. The novel is set in the 1920s and 1930s of Europe and California, where painters Einar Wegener and his wife, Greta, struggle to understand and cope with the emotional and physical impact of Einar’s change into Lili. The novel is not about the shock of changing from male to female but about the struggle to transform one’s life. More interesting than Einar’s transformation into Lili is Greta, who is the emotional center of the story. Her development from a reactionary child of wealthy parents into a strong woman and successful painter is interwoven into her husband’s development into a woman. She steers Einar to change into Lili. She also keeps them safe and finds the way out for all three. The end result is a novel that leaves one wondering about the inevitable nature of change. The prepublicity on this novel is strong, with rights sold to eleven foreign countries and movie bids. (Reviewed December 15, 1999) Neal Wyatt
