Anna Rasini, a writer, has been living in her grandmother’s home in Oxford, but now that her grandmother has died, she’s at loose ends. Then she sees a painting in an art gallery that is remarkably similar to one owned by her grandmother. Suddenly, Anna feels a need to learn the painting’s story. All she knows is the artist’s initials, and that her grandfather, whom her grandmother refused to talk about, brought it home from Greece. She can’t explain why, but she needs to confront and pacify the ghosts surrounding her family. So begins her journey of discovery, not only of the origin of the paintings but also of herself. Anna’s quest begins on the Greek island of Corfu, where she’s seemingly thwarted at every turn: the more inquiries she makes, the more closemouthed everyone becomes. In this engrossing tale, Stewart plunges the reader into a multilayered mystery, complete with a tall, dark, and handsome Frenchman who also has an urgent interest in the painting. Maria Hatton
