REVIEW. First published December 1, 2005 (Booklist).

Listeners familiar with Inkheart (2003) will get the most from this sequel, which begins without preamble as Dustfinger the fire-eater reenters the Inkworld, where the roles of writer, reader, and character intermingle and collide. Already ensconced there is the Inkweaver Fenolio, who created the vibrant, imaginative fantasyland of strolling players, princes, peasants, fire-eaters, and murderous villains. But to Fenolio’s annoyance and sorrow, the story that once flowed so smoothly from his pen has spun out of control, and its new direction is marked by tragedy and despair. In a strong narration rich with emotional undertones and well-placed sound effects, Fraser breathes life into the Inkweaver and his lovingly created characters—from wicked Mortola, whose harsh, Russian-accented voice bespeaks her vengeful nature, to Dustfinger, who is voiced in a soft Scottish brogue that perfectly fits his calm, quiet manner. Thrilling, joyful, and heartbreaking by turns, this fine production of an excellent novel will leave listeners hoping Fraser returns to narrate the final installment of the trilogy, which invites listeners to consider the exciting power and magic of words. Narrated by Lynne Redgrave, the Inkheart audio is also available from Listening Library.
