During World War II, a Japanese internment camp is constructed near the Stroud farm in Colorado. After a young neighbor girl is brutally murdered, many residents suspect a camp member has committed the crime. Tensions continue to rise when Loyal Stroud hires three young Japanese to work at his farm. Despite local prejudices, the Strouds hold strong to their convictions. The coming-of-age tale is told by teenager Rennie Stroud, a keen observer and eavesdropper. King sensitively narrates with feeling, easily injecting love, hate, sadness, and joy into the many tense and emotional scenes. She varies her tones to reflect ages and genders, allowing the personalities of the supporting characters to come through as clearly as those of the main players. Includes an interview with the author.
