First published October 15, 2007 (Booklist).
Structured in a cinema verité style (no interviews, voice-overs, or background music), this film follows Sheriff Ronald E. Hewett through his everyday work life. As the sheriff of rural Brunswick County, North Carolina, Hewett’s day is a mixture of public relations and law enforcement. He regularly switches hats and uniforms as he moves from meetings and speeches at local churches and schools to crime-scene investigation and a countywide manhunt for an escaped prisoner. Cameras also capture Hewett and staff shutting down illegal slot machines and participating in local parades. Hewett, who is unfailingly polite and outspoken about his conservative religious and moral beliefs, emerges as a man who is comfortable with himself as he handles his duties with tact and compassion. The confident sheriff is a shining example of law enforcement at its best. Part of the ongoing Work series, this insightful program offers an intriguing peek at small-town law enforcement.
