Confident, compassionate seventh-grader Zoë Costello enjoys her status as unofficial class guru, dispensing advice on everything from fashion to organizing class photos. Responsibilities continue at home, including helping care for Grandma, who has Alzheimer’s. But juggling everything is getting overwhelming, and things start unraveling as well-meaning efforts go awry. Ultimately, Zoë faces some difficult truths, gaining new perspective and appreciation for what matters most. Spunky, chocolate-chip-aficionado Zoë is an appealing, lively character, whose intimate, often humorous narrative juxtaposes comical scenarios against serious social and family issues. Designwise, phrases in boldface distract, though periodic cartoon drawings and scanned cookie images add whimsy and visual interest. An entertaining read that shows the difficulties and rewards of acceptance and letting go—important steps in growing up.
