REVIEW.
First published March 15, 2004 (Booklist).
This compelling fantasy about the adventures of 12-year-old bibliophile Meggie is most enchanting, thanks to talented reader Redgrave. Flexing her voice to play a variety of characters, she hooks listeners into the story of Meggie, who learns the bizarre truth about her father, a bookbinder. One gloomy night a mysterious stranger named Dustfinger, played with raspy creepiness by Redgrave, brings bad news about his scheming friend Capricorn. An epic journey follows. Redgrave triumphs in her portrayal of crusty Elinor, a brusque book collector, and in her scathing rendition of Capricorn, who spits out hilarious nasty monologues. Through her wide-ranging tones and energetic, sly reading, Redgrave keeps the action hopping and effectively conveys Funke’s obvious love of books. Atmospheric music begins and ends the production. This title is an ALA Notable Children’s Recording, 2004, selection as well as a Selected Audiobooks for Young Adults, 2004, choice. Brian Wilson
