REVIEW.
First published June 1, 1977 (Booklist).
Ballard brings off a successful exercise in sustained horror centered on a self-contained apartment community. Puzzling malicious incidents ripple the placid middle-class surface of sociability. As these increase in frequency, apartment dwellers metamorphose into cave dwellers sucked into a downward vortex towards primeval levels of existence. With no effort, this thriller can be envisioned as a film in the tradition of Airport, Hotel, etc. [unsigned review]
