The Measure of a Man.

REVIEW.
First published October 1, 2001 (Booklist).
These three stellar titles, all 2001 Audie Award winners, represent the finest of recordings. With haunting Gregorian chants in the background, a talented cast performs Pielmeier’s mesmerizing play, Agnes of God (best theatrical performance), a contemporary mystery set inside a convent. Bergl is particularly effective in her vocal portrayal of Sister Agnes, a young nun blessed with the voice of an angel who is accused of murdering her newborn child. Recorded before a live audience, the flawless production, complete with sound effects, is truly a moving experience. Poitier’s melodious voice and confiding manner make listening to the actor’s memoir The Measure of a Man (best nonfiction unabridged/solo narration) an intimate, memorable experience. In the final selection, actor Dee’s naturally sultry voice and keen ear for southern dialect and cadence make her reading of the poignant classic Their Eyes Were Watching God (best solo narration, female) most riveting. In Dee’s capable reading, Hurston’s dialect, sometimes difficult to read, becomes more accessible and brims with life. The combination of excellent writing and first-rate performances results in three winners for library audiobook collections. Candace Smith
