As his family gathers to celebrate a wedding, Adlai Birdsong sees a photo of his cousin’s fiancee and falls in love. When Grisham and Ariane, the bride- and groom-to-be, arrive at the family homestead, Adlai wonders how to win over Ariane in the space of a few days but keeps his interest well hidden from everyone except the child prodigy Boudou. Ariane, who knows that Grisham cheats on her, finds it hard to stop thinking about Adlai. Earlene, Boudou’s mother, has had enough of flighty men and decides she can be perfectly happy alone but still searches for the one that must be out there. The people in this small town are surprisingly endearing, despite their quirks. Numerous asides sprinkled throughout the novel make for a clever and memorable narrative style. This tale of love, life, and the breaking of generational curses will delight casual readers and literature buffs alike. Gavin Quinn
