Cast out by his wife after admitting to an affair, Lafayette Proulx takes himself, dog, and typewriter to the house of his girlfriend, Judy. Lafayette is a short story writer with no publications and a growing collection of rejection letters. He spends his time writing and endlessly creating fictional scenes in his head, but he’s 36 years old, drinks too much, and works part-time at a fish-and-chips shop. In other words, his life is a mess, and getting bounced by his wife provides the first inkling. Living with Judy heightens the realization process; her house is a meeting place for various dysfunctional types whom Lafayette is forced to compare himself with. When his father has bypass surgery and Judy is found to have cancer, Lafayette must confront the world that he has so long rejected. A breezy and egocentric narrative propels a story that’s very funny, quite sad, and occasionally tragic. (Reviewed December 15, 1996) Brian McCombie
