MacLean, a Londoner, found his intended journey upturned after a brief stay in Potsdam resulted in an unintended and incredible road trip through eastern Europe, the Baltic states, and Moscow with his elderly Aunt Zita, her pet pig Winston, and, for transport, a Soviet-made Trabant (akin more to a tin can than to a road vehicle), as the Berlin wall in Zita’s backyard was being torn down. As he relates the journey, MacLean portrays the upheavals endured by these countries within the context of his own family history--involving ancestors associated with both Nazi and Communist regimes. By the time the two arrive in Moscow for Zita’s pilgrimage to Lenin’s crypt, the author has managed to combine eloquent and sobering reflections on politics and human nature with outrageously funny episodes. This exhilarating debut depicts the lives of many individuals and the state of many nations, before and after Soviet rule. (Reviewed Dec. 15, 1992)0
